Introduction

In Memoriam, is one of the most experimental and influential poem of the century, Tennyson had refinished his characteristic basic poetic structure and need a theme that would permit him to apply gifts to a major form.

In Memoriam, represents major Victorian attempts to explain the ways of God to man in long poetic forms.  In Memoriam had nine natural groups of sections: 1-8, 9-20, 21-27, 28-44, 45-58, 59-71, 72-93, 94-103, 104-131.

In Memoriam resolves the crisis of faith representing by Hallam's death by presenting him doubly as a type, because he foreshadowed both the sound appearance of Christ and the coming higher race of human beings.

Generally speaking, the poem varies from section to section as it embodies or alludes to employ plain style with simple, even day diction; whereas others, emphasizes lush, sensuous language.  Similarly, the poem also manipulates its simple stanzic form (abab) with manipulate virtuosity, sections sometimes of only one or two long sentence; whereas other sections use very short sentences.

The poem immediately established Tennyson's reputation when it appeared, quickly earned enormous fame.

In Memoriam is an attempt to go beyond alternatives be made one, and this unity must be implied from the first dark lyric.  The attempt of In Memoriam is to rebuild a world of meaning by rebuilding medieval comedy.

Irrevocably, the poem's subject is much more personal, the form Tennyson chooses, the dramatic monologue, establishes a connection to reader.  The dramatic monologue addresses the reader directly, drawing the audience in the emotions while allowing to the poet maintaining a distance from the emotion.  Also, the faith and doubt are two obviously and dearly shown in the poem.

Where is Tennyson in the Poem?

Tennyson combines a deep interest in contemporary science with an unorthodox, even idiosyncration Christian belief, In Memoriam, which he wrote between 1833-1850 contains his most important and paramount confrontations with contemporary science, particularly with geology and biology.

Tennyson, the real, once-existing man with his actual belief, can not be extrapolated from within the poem's individual sections, for each section presents, Tennyson's analytical and momentum step-Tennyson makes re-experience an idealized version of his own separate experience and there by ready to accept the entirely subjective truths of religious beliefs.

In Memoriam was printed, the poet found himself with a bank accept of £300 and the promise of a regular income from his poems sufficient to warrant his marriage.

Tennyson called, "In Memoriam the way of the soul, and a drama of soul"(1) set in a landscape glorified by love.  But the matter of Tennyson's poetry is spiritualized by the personality of the man.  One critic, therefore, says that Tennyson is not a true dramatic poet because he has the limitation of his day and generation, he is romantic not dramatic.  This poem does not only fixed his rank as a poet, but gave him ready money and income sufficient to enable him to subject marriage.

The proto-hyper textuality of In Memoriam thus atomize and disperses, Tennyson the man.  Tennyson, the real, once - existing man with his actual beliefs and fears, can't be extrapolated from within the poem's individual sections for each presents Tennyson only the movement.

Faith and Doubt in the Poem

There is thus a difference between what I call "science doubt" and "stubborn doubt"(2), if a person has genuine intellectual concerns what the validity of the Christian world view, I all that doubt.  If he is merely seeking to justify his own behaviour or he evades the enjoys playing devil's advocate while he evades the issue - I call that stubborn doubt.  This distinction explains why Tennyson could say:

"There lives more faith in honest doubt,

Believe me, than in half the creeds,"(3)

The modern concept of faith might be summarized as in intellectual assent to something non-intellectual in nature.

The problem of faith appears as the relation between faith and keeping faith, between belief and right conduct (or right identity).  This relation, which makes conversational experience central to the meaning of the work, appears embodied in relations of men and women, especially that of marriage.

The poem presents the inspired project of a poet.  The religion structure of In Memoriam, which took the reader from despair to doubt and then to hope before arrives to faith, also leads us progressively to discover a final of the role of the poet and justification of his enterprise.

Tennyson leads the reader of In Memoriam from grief and despair through doubt to hope and faith, but teaching step stubborn, contrary emotions, untrue, and one encounters doubt in the midst of faith, pain in the midst of resolution.

"Its faith is a poor thing - but its doubt is a very intense experience."(4) , of course, the terms are useful: "faith" and "doubt" in vote issues both layer and more basic than religious faith or ponderings about the existence of God.  The poem is as, Basil Willy, says concerned with questions that antedate Christianity, those which confront "the natural man".  The real problem is not the connection between God and man, but the nature of connection itself - Tennyson searches not much for religious continuity as for any continuity.

For Tennyson, the disjuncture between his doubt, and his mother's faith pointed to something more serious.

The poem explores how man can live in a world that is denied easily perceived structure, one where human experience can be no longer explained by analogy with liner mathematics.

Eliot says that if the doubt is "a very intense experiences, how can the faith be a poor thing."(5)  The fact is that a comedy's move to dominate the poem is blocked by several very large problems.

In Memoriam presents itself to be judge us the finest comic peom of the nineteenth century.  It also illustrates how terrible difficult country, if not impossible, the comic from was to stain.

"Ultimately, the faith and doubt are like the boundary between the love and the ocean."(6) .  If you walk along the beach, where the land ends and the worker begins, you would never make the mistake of thinking that the ocean was simply "the absence of land", it is a real things just as the land.  In fact, faith is based on intellectual.

Conclusions

Blankly, faith is when you believe something which you know is not true.  The point is, it could be a true story.  In our modern society, faith is viewed as a wispy, tenuous things, age and shadowy.

"Faith and doubt are like light and darkness."(7); we sometimes speak of light as "pushing back the darkness", but we are only using a figure of the absence.  Darkness is not a real thing; it is only the absence of light.  The only way of getting rides of the darkness is with more light.

Concluded "In Memoriam is written in reaction to the death of his friend Arthur Hallam"(8), it deals with the subject of faith.  In his particular the speaker writes through despair and a loss of faith to come to an understanding.

Also, everyone should re-examine his belief system from time to time.  Many Christian parents are afraid to allow their children to re-examine their faith because they never did it themselves; and also because that they have seen that kind of re-evaluation lead to people abandoning and Christianity. But the Christian faith is not some fragile crystal sculpture that can be destroyed by a passing breeze.  Besides, sincere doubt leads to faith.
